Through
our partnership with Foundation Ministries International (FMI)
we are actively involved in supporting orphans and widows in western
Kenya. We would like to introduce you to Dan Agao and Joseph
Allen. We have been in a long standing relationship with these
men for many years and they are faithful, trustworthy men. We know
you will be encouraged to hear of their work with orphans and
widows.
Dan and Agnes Agao live in western Kenya where Dan
is a local church pastor. He
is a long time member of the Kenya Team of FMI. In eighteen years, Dan has proven to be a man of
integrity, an excellent teacher and pastor, and most importantly
has a heart for helping widows and orphans. Long before FMI began
to help Dan and his wife Agnes, they had a functioning ministry
to widows and orphans.
Their method was simply to find a Christian couple or perhaps a
single woman or widow and ask them to take one or more orphans
to provide shelter and food if possible. Dan and Agnes would provide
some monthly allotment of food and raise money to keep the children
in school. They worked similar to the foster care program in the
USA except most probably the children would remain there until
they completed school. Many of the households of couples and widows
already had children, so they could fit right in and be raised
in a Christian household like other african children rather than
in an institution.
Today Dan and Agnes help nearly 50 orphans and
11 widows. About seven of the children reside with Dan and Agnes
so they know first hand about rearing orphans. In addition to the
monthly care, Dan has also been instrumental with help of FMI in
constructing houses for several widows in the traditional African
way of mud, sticks and metal roof. Some had been living under a
tree when their homes were constructed.
Joseph
and Sarah Allen live in western Kenya. Jeseph is a local church pastor and has been a member of the Kenya Team of FMI
for 14 years. Joseph and his family live in the same region as
Dan and Agnes Agao. In addition to leading the local congregation,
Joseph teaches pastors’ seminars across Kenya and into
Tanzania most every month. Many years ago Joseph and Sarah began
to assist widows and orphans on an ongoing basis. They found
Christian homes for children with couples, widows and single
ladies. After watching them for many years, FMI leadership decided
to assist Joseph and Sarah so they could enlarge the program
and also make it more consistent. Today they assist nearly 50
children and 18 widows on a continuing basis. Several of the
orphans and one widow reside in their own household. They do
not ask people to do what they are unwilling to do themselves.
In addition to the food provided by the pastors, the older
children and widows that are physically able plant small plots
or gardens every year to raise corn, tomatoes, onions, sweet
potatoes and other crops to supplement their monthly help.
This also teaches the children to farm and as Africa is still
very rural, this may be the way they survive in future years.
