How's Your Walk?

All last year I felt as if the Lord was speaking to the church about walking. I asked myself, just what exactly does this mean? Here is what I feel like the Lord was showing me. By the way, the reason why I share it is because I feel it is what the Lord is saying for 2005 as well.

There never seems to be a shortage of new movements in the church these days. If it's not the apostolic reformation, it is a call to "pray the scriptures." If not praying the scriptures, it is new prophetic revelation. And the list goes on and on. Well, as usual, I may seem a bit idealistic for some, but I can't help but be drawn to the words of the New Testament. Paul says in Ephesians 4:1, "Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called." Also, in Colossians 1:10 he says, "that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God." It seems to me the "emphasis" for Paul was never on some new revelation or new movement, but was always on the basic things that come from a life consecrated to God in simple devotion to Christ.

So how are we supposed to walk? Paul tells us in Ephesians that the way we walk is in humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, and being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (4:2, 3). Wow! It's no wonder we find other "new" and "exciting" things to focus on. The original order seems almost to tall to fill. You mean I really need to walk in humility and gentleness? What about the violent taking the kingdom by force? (I will leave that for another time.) Do we really have to show tolerance for those who believe differently than we do? What about making sure everyone we come in contact with agrees with our doctrines or convictions? At least if they don't agree with us we have made sure they know what we believe. And the unity of the Spirit--what does that really mean? Well, these are all hard questions to ask, and still harder to answer. But these are the things we need to live every day if we are going to walk in a manner worthy of our calling.

So what does this mean for the church? As always, I feel it is all about getting back to the basics--building on the proper foundation and being careful to guard the simplicity and purity of Christ. While I am sure the Lord is speaking in new ways to His church through numerous movements and emphases, I think sometimes they may be diverting us from doing what really matters. Let us all set out in 2005 to walk in a manner that is worthy of our calling in Christ--to bring Him glory in all things so that the church can come into full maturity and unity in Him and the world will see that we are His disciples.

Street Boys Camp Update

We have just finished a fabulous two week camp for the street boys here in Worcester. This camp began as a dream in the hearts of a handful of people six months ago. Our desire was to take the boys off the streets for two weeks and to give them the chance of a lifetime to meet God in a fun and practical way. After much prayer and hard work, 15 staff and 24 boys set out for the Waterfalls Farm 30 kilometers outside of Worcester for two full weeks of camp. Many individuals and businesses in the community gave sacrificially to help make the camp a reality. The boys arrived on Friday night December 17th and completed the camp on Sunday, January 2nd.

All the boys at the camp come from the worst home situations that one can imagine. Several of them don't have any family at all and live full-time on the streets. Others choose to leave their homes due to the excessive use of alcohol and drugs in the home and the physical and emotional abuse they experience there. All the boys are between the ages of 10 and 17. Lionel is 12 years old and currently lives full-time on the streets in Worcester behind the 7-11 store on Main Street. Both of Lionel's parents are alcoholics and he left home two years ago out of safety for his own life. His father is very violent and has been imprisoned on numerous occasions.

It has been a real learning experience to work with these boys during the camp. In many ways they have experienced more in their short lives than many people experience in a lifetime. The challenging situations they have faced has caused them to create a rugged exterior that protects them from further hurt. They also have a strong "survival" mentality. Lionel, for instance, when threatened by Adian, another camper, over a piece of candy, stabbed him in the shoulder with a fork! At the same time these boys have a side of them that is all boy, with all the emotions, interests and desires that all little boys have. They are starving for affirmation and love and receive it freely when it is offered. It has been amazing to watch the Lord begin to lovingly peel back that exterior veneer in their lives and begin to reveal their hearts as hurting and desperate young boys. We are believing that God will completely heal and deliver them for His glory.

Lemille is 17 and spent several years on the street and is currently off the streets now and living in a home with other former street boys on the Kibbutz El-Shammah here in Worcester. Lemille has accepted Jesus and is growing spiritually. His mother is an alcoholic who continually changes boyfriends who abuse her and Lemille and she does not want Lemille in her life. Lemille has a strong calling on his life from the Lord and we believe that God is going to use him significantly in reaching the other boys. He shared with the boys at the camp during one of the gathering times and exhorted them to get off the streets and give their lives to Jesus. He told them that the devil wants to destroy their lives and that their only hope is in Jesus. He told me the last Saturday morning of the camp that he wanted to have a bible of his own so he could read it and learn more and I told him I would buy him one Monday morning! Pray that the Lord will strengthen Lemille and keep him from all the temptations he faces everyday to go back to the streets.

Ivan Williams

Ivan and his wife Sophia live on the Kibbutz El-Shammah and currently run the boys home there. Ten boys live in the home and have all been off the streets for over a year. These boys are on the road to living a healthy life and many are growing in their relationship with the Lord. Ivan and Sophia fill the role of parents for these ten boys in every way. Ivan is an ex-gangster who God has greatly anointed to reach these boys and the surrounding community. The Roodewal community that these boys come out of is the most impoverished area of Worcester with over 30,000 people living in government housing facilities originally designed for 8,000 tenants. The community is full of alcohol and drug abuse, violence and organized crime. This community desperately needs a move of God to capture the hearts of the people.

Ivan and Sophia understand the needs of these boys and do a great job working with them. They are constantly faced with very challenging situations and need the wisdom of the Lord on a daily basis. It would be wonderful if you would pray for Ivan and Sophia as you remember them. They have two young

boys of their own in addition to the ten boys they look after on the Kibbutz.

January marks another milestone for our family as Wesley will start full time preschool. Wesley is excited about school and we are looking forward to the changes this will bring to our life as well. Stephanie is planning on doing some volunteer work at one of the local Afrikaans speaking schools in order to learn Afrikaans as well as help with the music classes at our children's school. Cliff will continue to build relationships here locally and teach as well as travel here in South Africa and into other African nations. We will also continue working with YWAM and the street kids ministry.

We want to thank you all for your prayers and support over the last two years. We have learned much as a family and have seen the faithfulness of the Lord in ways like never before. Please pray that we will have wisdom for the coming year. We want to be directed by the Spirit every day. We look forward to a great year and will keep you updated as the year unfolds.

God bless you all,

Cliff, Stephanie, Camille, Natalie and Wesley
